"It’s the absence of grandstanding, of Stoppardian showing off, that makes this film different, as a lovely meditation on what parts of a man’s legacy truly matter."
★★★★
- Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph
"All Is True is sentimental, theatrical, likable - and unfashionable.."
★★★★
- Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"All Is True is just what you would want for a Shakespeare biopic directed by Kenneth Branagh - it’s touching and impeccably well-acted, with great turns from the director and on-screen wife Judi Dench."
★★★★
- Lewis Knight, Daily Mirror
"It dodges the pitfalls of luvviedom and period camp to produce a fiercely intelligent and poignant drama about family, grief and the tyranny of genius."
★★★★
- Kevin Maher, Times
William Shakespeare (Kenneth Branagh, who also directs) returns to Stratford, with the Globe Theatre having burnt to the ground and his inspiration faltering. His wife Anne Hathaway (Judi Dench) sees him as a stranger after the many absent years. This ‘retirement’ of sorts is actually the beginning of a new awakening, living the life and love that he has dedicated his years to writing about.
Written by Ben Elton (who also penned Shakespearean TV comedy Upstart Crow), this is a new take on Shakespeare that collects together the cream of British acting talent (including Ian McKellen) and is shot with an elegance and beauty, as well as a pitched honesty, that is a tribute to the Bard.
